can anyone explain to me why its a such a big deal that papelbon expressed his feelings about having manny leave the red sox organization? obviously, he isn’t going to have the nicest things to say — manny caused an incredible disturbance in the red sox club house and now that he is gone, it seems the disturbance has followed him. was calling ramirez cancer a little extreme? yes, probably, but does it make his point, most definitely.

I think one of the best points pap’s made was that it just seemed like such bull that manny was trying to pull. Take these comments from redsox.com: “Yeah, because you know how much he could help your team,” Papelbon said. “You know how much this guy could really help your team, and he’s not. He’s sitting out against No. 1 starters, doing this or that. You ask him what knee hurts and he goes, ‘Oh, I don’t know which one today’s going to hurt.’ Give me a break. And he thinks it’s a big joke. Well, we’re out here trying to win ballgames, not figure out which one of your knees hurt.”

go hide manny

I think with these comments just being published now, it makes it look like papelbon and the red sox are dwelling on the situation, but come on this was from an interview he did in december. back in december the wound was still raw from the let down they had experienced with manny. there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that manny was a key part of the red sox organization for his entire career there, but he was also a thorn in the side of the red sox throughout his career with boston. let’s take spring training for instance…i can remember ONE season where manny showed up on time and in good spirits. he looked healthy and he looked like he actually wanted to be in fort meyers. every year prior he claimed a death in the family, a health crisis, or some other natural disaster that would keep him from attending spring training until nearly part way through. and that pattern continues even now that he has “found happiness” in LA. In my opinion it was part of his plan all along to drag out his contract signing so that he could stay away from spring training for the beginning of the spring. and to top it all off, when he finally signed and managed to drag his ass to ST he was scratched from his first start because of a “tight hamstring”! OH PLEASE! maybe if you had gotten off your ass this winter and done what you are supposed to do to get ready for the season you wouldn’t have to worry about tight hamstrings. I don’t mean to pick on mr. ramirez, but you are getting paid $20 mil this year to play a GAME! get to work in february like everyone else and take it seriously man. but as you and i all know, that’s just manny being manny, man.

maybe papelbon was right, he is cancer to a clubhouse. a big malignant tumor that the doctor’s can’t ever fully remove. good luck LA…you’re going to need it.

i like how manny didn’t sign with anyone until part way through spring training…a new way to avoid spring training…i think he finally realized that his grandmother couldn’t keep dying…you know part of me is glad he will be with the dodgers again, maybe this year when they have to deal with him for an entire season, they will finally get to see the real manny. so good luck with that Mr. Torre and Mr. McCourt…good luck.

A game of inches…

Last night the point was re-ittirated that baseball is a game of inches. If Erick Aybar gets that ball anywhere in play we’ve got the Angels with a 1 run lead. Aybar’s job was to do something, anything, besides what he did. I remember learning about suicide squeeze plays in high school, why we use them, what the situations are and what the hitters job is. Your job as a hitter is to do ANYTHING at all to protect that runner on 3rd — they are dead without you. And sure enough Willits was a dead duck because of Aybar. I will give it to Varitek, he did a good job — no a GREAT job. He did what all catchers are taught, charge at the runner like it’s life or death. And he made the out. He had control of the ball when he made the out, it was after the play had been call that he dropped the ball. Enough with all this questioning it…An out is an out is an out. And LESTER, Bay, Kotsay, Lowrie and FINALLY — PEDIE — coming through big last night. The thing I love about these guys, and this is the same thing I loved about the team of Kevin Millar, Johnny Damon, Manny and Ortiz…they are goof balls and scrappers…They just get it done, now matter how ugly it is, they just get it done. I love that everyone is contributing right now. A lot has been made of the Beckett struggle and Pedroia’s struggle of late, but while I know it’s frustrating for Pedie and Beckett, it’s not the end of the world. Their teammates are there to pick them up, to carry them and to help them get back to that form they need to be in. Beckett will get back to form in the next series, I can tell. And Pedie got that off the wall double last night, I think that will be the pick me up he needed. I have all the faith in the world in these guys and I know they will pull through. To hell with the Rays. Yeah, they are good, but not unbeatable. I say Sox in 6. And it’s going to be interesting.

manny being manny, man.

I will admit, I liked Manny when he first came to Boston, but I fell out of love with him a few years ago and I haven’t looked back since. However, I still feel a distinct sense of loss with his leaving…whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing, I don’t know yet. I can appreciate that fact that Manny is a fun guy. He is always waving and talking to fans between pitches, between innings out in left field. But I can’t handle the fact that he doesn’t explode out of the batter’s box after every hit; he doesn’t appreciate the fact that he makes $20mil to PLAY A GAME THAT I WOULD PLAY FOR FREE!  I understand there is more involved with playing baseball now than there ever has been, but I think $20 mil is a lot to do ANYTHING. Do you that Manny could support an ENTIRE starving country on that money. Think about that one. And he pushed a 64 year old man over some tickets for his family?!?! Couldn’t he ask his teammates to share or something? Couldn’t he respect the fact that No means No means No and violence (especially toward one of his elders) is NEVER acceptable? I am fed up with Manny and his antics and I say good riddance. Yes, I will miss the 3-4 combo of him and Ortiz; I will miss the hair; the smile; the goofiness; but I won’t miss the “poor manny” mentality that he has been throwing around of late; I won’t miss hearing that his grandmother died, again; and I won’t miss this mid year temper tantrum. Go have fun with Jeff Kent…I pity Joe Torre today.
